SingTel's Response To Blocked Apps Issue

This is SingTel's response to my question about why it took the actions it did on Sunday night and Monday morning, breaking apps like iBBOM and Singtel Data Usage. The unedited statement below is attributed to Mr Lee Kwang Yong, SingTel's Director of Consumer Marketing.

"We are currently not blocking third-party applications that claim to have the capability of checking customers’ data usage from SingTel's servers. However, we would advise our SingTel BroadBand on Mobile customers to use the official data checking program at http://home.singtel.com/bbmobile/checkusage.asp. This will give them an accurate calculation of their data usage.

"We are not able to verify the accuracy of these applications as we are not privy to how these independent developers did their programming. Hence, should there be updates or changes to our data checking facility, they may not be updated timely by the independent application developers, which will result in inaccurate calculation and confusion to our customers.

"Our customers will be pleased to know that we are currently working with selected third-party developers to create applications that check data usage and will inform our customers when they are ready. Interested developers can also contact us to see how we can collaborate to develop such programs.

"We are also developing a SMS query program which allows customers to check their data usage record through their mobile phones by dialling *SBBOM (*72266). They will then receive a SMS informing them of how much data they have used. The program will be launched on Wed, 7 October."
